In Year 4, we have high expectations for both effort and attitude, and we know that together we can help the children achieve their very best. To support their learning at home, we ask that:

  • Children practise Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) at least four times a week, to build fluency and confidence with multiplication facts.

  • Children read at home at least four times a week, ideally aloud to an adult, to develop their understanding, vocabulary, and love of reading.

Thank you for your continued support with these routines – they make a huge difference. We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning and discovery in Year 4!

Curriculum

Welcome to Class 4. On this page you can see what we will be doing throughout the year. You will find helpful links and information that will showcase our amazing work each term. If you have any queries please contact a year four member of staff.

Autumn 1

This term, the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring The Dark, using the story as inspiration to create their own imaginative writing about overcoming fears and finding courage.

In Maths, we are developing our understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000, building confidence in reading, ordering, and partitioning larger numbers.

Our Science lessons are sparking curiosity as we investigate the fascinating world of electricity, learning how circuits work and discovering how electrical devices are powered.

In RE, we are exploring ancient stories and reflecting on how they continue to influence modern celebrations and beliefs today. The children are making thoughtful connections between the past and present, deepening their understanding of faith, culture, and tradition.

A highlight of the term was our Family Learning session, where parents and carers joined us in school to take part in collaborative LEGO building activities. It was wonderful to see families learning, creating, and problem-solving together.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of multiplication and division, using a range of practical resources and strategies to build confidence and fluency. We have also begun exploring fractions, learning about equal parts and making links between fractions, shapes, and numbers.

In Science, we are investigating states of matter, exploring the properties of solids, liquids, and gases through hands-on experiments and observations. The children have enjoyed asking scientific questions and discovering how materials can change state through heating and cooling.

During Year 4, children will take part in the multiplication timetable checker (MTC). This is assessment is 25 multiplication questions that children have six seconds to answer each question. The aim of the assessment is to see if children can recall their timetables fluently.

In school we use two websites to help us with our timetables. TTRSand Mathshed. Both have features that allow children practice speed and fluency.
